12 days of Christmas gifts are a great way to recognize a special time during the Christmas season. The Biblical and Theological Resource for Growing Christians tells us that the Twelve Days of Christmas is probably the most misunderstood part of the church year among Christians because contrary to popular belief, the 12 days of Christmas are not the twelve days before Christmas but are actually the 12 days from Christmas (December 25th) until the beginning of Epiphany (January 6th). You can read more about this and the other facts I will mention later at www.cresourcei.org. Most of us only know about the 12 days of Christmas from the Christmas carol that's played during this time of year. So let's take a look at some of the 12 days of Christmas gifts that we can exchange.
We all know how the song goes so I won't repeat it all here except to relate the meaning of what "my true love gave to me." The song refers to many things from the partridge in a pear tree that my true love gave me to six geese a laying to twelve drummers drumming. Each item that my true love gave me is specifically referring to something in the Bible – either the Old Testament or the New Testament. For example on the first day my true love gave me a partridge in a pear tree. The partridge refers to Jesus Christ whose birthday we celebrate at Christmas. Gift options for 12 days of Christmas gifts include a ceramic baby Jesus in a manger. It doesn't have to be very expensive as you have other gifts to give on other days. Other 12 days of Christmas gifts as they relate to the specific items in the song include (1) a new Bible, (2) a charm bracelet with the inscription of "faith," "hope" and "love," (3) a picture of a biblical quote from one of the Four Gospels, (4) a plaque depicting the 10 Commandments, or (5) a painting of some sort with the skies opening up showing light as a representative of God saying "let there be light."
The 12 days of Christmas gifts can be gifts of whatever makes the Christmas season special to you. They don't have to be over the top in cost but they should have special meaning to both you and the person you are giving them to. After all the 12 days of Christmas gifts are an indication of what Jesus has done for you and the world at large.
